Back to politics...

Aside from the recent assasination nonsense from Pat Robertson....it turns out that "evil" Venezualen President Hugo Chavez has proposed the sale of cheap gasoline to poor Americans.

Damn those considerate populists....turning the other cheek and all...

And....it appears that the American Legion has fallen into lock step with the pro-war elite....calling for Americans to shut up about war in public. Gee...those American freedoms that our soldiers are protecting certainly seem to be getting marginalized these days...

Random acts of film...

Currently working out the details for tonight's Canoofle event at the Clinton. I've got a small collection of items that are good candidates, but I'm not sure until I get them grouped. Right now the topics are: Woody Woodpecker, Biology of Fungi, Computers - the Friendly Invasion, Marijuana Alert and Visit to Mars.

** POST EVENT **

At the risk of sounding bitter....I won't go into to much detail, suffice it to say that last night was rough.

Aside from a grand total of 6 attendees (thanks to Dave for coming), I had a problem with the second reel - followed by film breakage on the backup - followed 5 minutes of film unspooled on the floor - etc...etc....

Labor of love, anyone?

Clinton Street Shuffle...

So...this week is my marathon at the Clinton Street Theater. I go from making movies to showing them, it seems. Anyway....I ended up at the CST on Saturday night for the Darren Stein (director of Jawbreaker) event, which drew a small but engaged crowd. Stein was also screening his new documentary "Put the Camera On Me", an examination of his early films and the friends who helped make them. A great window into adolescence and very fun to watch. Jawbreaker was a kick as well. Like "Heathers", but even more so. Those in attendance had a great chance to talk with Darren - who was very candid at times, and put everyone at ease. He had some great stories about moviemaking craziness and looked like he was having a good time. Apparently, he used this event as an excuse to hang in Portland for the weekend...he flew back to L.A. the next day.

Last night, I cued up Trailermania 2 to a crowd just slightly larger than what Darren got. Aside from the usual technical/projector jitters, things got going without a hitch and the audience was humming along - laughing and hooting at the occasional hyperbole or cheesy bit of dialogue. As the second reel got spinning, I had a splice break - and film started unspooling all over the projector room floor. Thankfully, I was still rewinding the first reel, so I was there when it happened, and managed to rescue the reel. The only other hangup came during the second show - when the sound dropped out of phase during the Magnificent Seven. Thankfully, Seth showed me a quick projector fix - the "reboot" button - which saved the rest of the first reel. Ahh....the joys of analog technology.

Tonight is the Investigative Journalism show - which I hope gets a decent showing. Both features are largely out of the public eye - and merit a viewing by anyone interested in corporate greed and public policy on the enviroment. "The Killing Ground" was even nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar in 1980 - the only investigative television production to me recognized as such. Anyway...the material is solid....we'll just see how it goes.

In other news...

Good on Cindy Sheehan! Despite efforts by the Right-wing noise machine, she continues to gather attention in Crawford. She has the courage to speak out against the pResident - and hopefully that courage will motivate others to do the same.

This month has been horrible for Iraqis and U.S. troops, with a mounting death toll that the Bush adminstration has done little to account for. After a while, the old "stay the course" mantra is going to start sounding a little hollow to the average American. What the Dems need to do now is step behind John Conyers and the few remaining passionate lawmakers - and offer the American people another option. Not of abandoning the Iraqis, but of withdrawl and reperations. As long as we are there - Iraq will never recover.

There is a better way....and it requires that we leave soon.

Dude....that's better than Wal-Mart!

Wow.

Still recovering from shooting that short film last night. Although I wrapped at Midnight, it took me a couple hours to come down. Arrived at the Mint-Mart on Marine Drive to a host of techies and trailers. After dressing down in shorts and "Chump" t-shirt, I met some of the extras - and was assuming my role not long afterwards.

All in all - a great experience that I can't wait to see on screen. I just hope I don't look like a total fool - even though I'm the 'Beer Guy' (ala the "Big Lebowski" Dude) and have five lines that I get to ham up (including the subject header). Had to sign paperwork for SAG...and got a really tasty midnight lunch. Film was shot on Super16 with a full pro crew...so it's a tight-looking effort. Title of the short is "Inconvenience" - and details a mini-mart holdup with a mixed up chronology. Good script. I asked Korgan to do the PDX premiere at the Clinton, so we'll see what's up.

The U.S. opening will be at the Bumbershoot Fest in Seattle on Labor Day. I might have to jet from being Belushi in Cottage Grove on the 3rd to Beer Man in Seattle on the 5th. See a trend here?

Here are the fest details:

The 1 Reel Challenge: Are You F**king Kidding Me!?!
3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

1 Reel. 1 Question. 10 Filmmakers. The fourth annual 1 Reel Challenge defies formerly-presented filmmakers to respond to this profanely rhetorical query. Including new works from Mark Duplass, Seth Henrikson, Todd Korgan, Sir Tim McCarthy, Sir Jason Reitman, AJ Schnack, Jacob Strunk and John Vechey.

Beer Guy and a Bad day in Iraq

So I got a call last week from my casting agency - wanting me to audition for a role in a new short film by PDX director Todd Korgan. When I showed up to read, I was in the company of two big guys dressed as bikers (they were in fact, the real thing). I soon discovered that the role was for a biker-type, which left me and my Hawaiian shirt/shorts feeling kinda lame and leatherless. Regardless, my acting must have made an impression, as I landed the role. They even changed the character a little to look like The Dude from The Big Lebowski. I love it when I get typecast. Anyway, the shoot is this evening, so I'll post the aftermath when it rolls in.

In other news...

Lest we forget the continuing travisty in the Middle East....14 soldiers were killed by another makeshift bomb - for a total of 21 in the last three days.

The current official U.S. toll is 1821 dead and 13559 injured. Add that to 26264 Iraqi civilians killed - and you have a pResident who has a lot of explaining to do.

Impromptu BBQ

Alex had her annual singing gig down in Albany this evening, so I took the liberty of inviting a few friends over for a little BBQ love - and perhaps the rebirth of drive-in movie night.

Brother Chris, Jenn/Aaron and Dave (along with his trusty pug Lulu) all made the gathering. Greer even got in on the action by meeting Lulu with much delight. After some burgers, potato salad, fruit salad and numerous beers - we ended up retiring to the basement for a few 16mm offerings - foregoing the backyard due to the existing light at 8pm. Ah well, perhaps when the days get shorter.

Good time had by all...
